FAQ's

Do I have to be skilled in the park? / What skills do I need to have?

No. Team Afton: Freestyle is a great way to learn and develop skills in the terrain park. Perspective participants should have an INTEREST in the terrain park though. While we do work to develop skills in and out of the park, there is a significant portion of each practice will be spent in the terrain park. Participants should be able to comfortably navigate blue terrain while linking turns.

What type of equipment do I need?

Participants should own their own skis/snowboards/boots as rental equipment is not ideal for terrain park use and lines can be long at times which may impact ability to arrive on time for practice. Additionally, Helmets are required.

A few additional notes:

  • Glove protectors or strong leather gloves are advised. Soft leather or synthetic gloves will often be quickly destroyed by the tow ropes.
  • Race skis are often too stiff for freestyle use and can be damaged by boxes/rails.
  • If shopping for new equipment, look for phrases like “Freestyle”, “Twin”, “Soft/Mid Flex”. Don’t go overboard, but spending a little more than “low cost” options can lead to a better experience. Used equipment can often be found online or during the Fall Fair.

I missed the start date, can I still sign up?

YES! We are always happy to have people join the team.

What if we do not attend the competitions?

Competitions are not required for any athletes. While we certainly encourage everyone to attend, if you are unable to attend or just are not interested that is OK. Competitions give our athletes a chance to come together and test their skills against their peers but our main focus is having fun, supporting one another and personal development.

I missed the start date, can I still sign up?

YES! We are always happy to have people join the team.

Can families watch come to the competitions?

YES! We encourage families to come and it can be a great opportunity to invite grandparents/friends/extended family. Some host sites are more readily accessible to spectators than others. I will do my best to help advise you one which are which.

Do I need to buy a lift tickets for competitions?

Lift tickets are required for anyone skiing/riding. Spectators are able to walk onto the hill to watch and do not require a lift ticket.
