Read what people are saying about Team Afton. For many, their involvement with the Team Afton community has greatly influenced their life. For some, it has helped them focus on what's important. For others, it has helped them shape their values. For athletes, parents, and coaches...... it can be a life-changing experience filled with life-long memories and exhilarating highlights.

Here's what parents and coaches are saying.....

  • Tony, Last week I was away for work until Friday evening.  Saturday morning we headed to Afton for the first Devo race of the year.  I was extremely impressed with how much our daughter, YYYY,  has improved since starting associates.  Heck, her improvement over just this past week of sub zero practices was phenomenal!  She loves practices and races even more.  You have a great team of coaches and Leaders, and I wanted to pass along our families appreciation for their devotion to the sport.  I will let her tell you about her races as she was beaming with excitement yesterday. Best, G&MK
  • Tony, Thank you for being such a wonderful part of (our kids X/Y) lives this 2014 – 2015 winter season.  I still remember when XXXX came home from his first day at Afton practice.  He was nervous before heading out that evening and came back grinning ear to ear. He told me there was an Afton coach that had such a good sense of humor.  He talked about “pole plants”.  I can still hear him saying, “No, Mom, Pole Plants”.  He could not wait to go back for the next practice.  For YYYY, my favorite memory was a story DDDD told me about your time together in Beaver Creek.  YYYY was standing at the start for one of her races with tears in her eyes as she had missed her start time.  As I understand it, you told her that you would go when she was ready . . . and then 10 minutes later DDDD had two pictures on his phone, one of sad YYYY and you (a selfie) and one of happy YYYY and you (another selfie).  She then came cruising down the run, excited about skiing. You are truly a gifted coach.  Thank you for sharing your talents with the Afton program. My very best, PN
  • Our coaches have a huge impact on our kids. They give the kids so much more than just ski racing pointers. They give them a chance to change their mental attitude about life. The encouragement and support that the kids take away from the ski hill influences their school work, their other sports, their social life and the way they feel about themselves.
  • The quality of the coaching is what keeps us committed to Team Afton. We’re especially thrilled that safety is premier. After all, it’s a dangerous, fast sport. It’s wonderfully reassuring to a parent to see our cool coaches telling the kids to be safe.
  • Team Afton has a reputation for being warm and welcoming. The families all made us feel welcome from the very beginning. And we really liked all the kids. Everyone was right – Team Afton is a strong community.
  • Team Afton coaches have helped my son take his ski racing to a whole new level. He’s continually improving and setting his sights higher and higher. At Team Afton, he gets positive reinforcement from teammates and parents, as well as the coaches.
  • As a member of Team Afton, my son has developed a whole new group of friends outside his school peers. I think his ski racing buddies are really his closest friends because of the way they share the same experiences and support each other in the most amazingly healthy competitive spirit.
  • Ski racing has given my son a real identity, an awareness of who he is and what’s important to him. It’s taught him self discipline and how to prioritize to meet his goals. And not just on the ski slope, but at school and in his social life.
  • Through Team Afton, my son has made some really close friends, in fact, some of his best friends. And the other parents and families we’ve met through Team Afton have become wonderful friends. After all, you spend a lot of time together and really get to know one another well.
  • Ski racing has taught him self discipline and organization. He sets personal goals, stays focused, and structures his days and weekends so he can achieve his goals.
  • Competition is an important part of ski racing. But it isn’t the only thing. The travel experience, for example, has taught my son about the importance of self confidence, independence, flexibility and adaptability.
  • My son feels an incredible loyalty to Team Afton – the coaches, the team members, the families, and the ski area itself. The coaches have earned his trust, his respect and his allegiance. They go beyond ski coaching. The Team Afton coaches are more like life mentors.
  • I love coaching the kids and seeing them grow up and develop. I get to see kids start high school, go away to college, then come back. It’s really an ongoing life process. Once you’re involved in ski racing, you stay involved. You’re always a part of it and you always come back.
  • The sport of ski racing offers so much more than just competition. It’s a sport that fine tunes your mental conditioning. You learn about yourself because you’re totally out there on your own. You learn to depend on yourself. You understand the value of making good decisions and using good judgment.
  • Through ski racing, I’ve developed life long friends. Ski racers share so much in common beyond the ski hill.
  • Ski racing is the key to family time. How often do parents get to spend the weekend with their 16 year old? Driving to practice and to races means time together with your kids – time to talk and stay connected. Ski racing keeps you involved in healthy activities.
  • Hey Tony - My daughter came home and reported that you said, "Great work! I just don't have anything to say to you except that I've taught you well!" She was really pumped up by that. Last year was a tough one - coming off her injury. I'm so proud of her newly established confidence and technique. Thanks for your terrific coaching!
  • Tony - You run a fantastic program and we are very happy to be a part of it. Our son is really making progress!!! So, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all the great coaching and encouraging you and your staff have provided.. You have made a really positive impact on him and his skiing; and we really appreciate it.
  • We want you to know that Team Afton has proven to be a club that supports the entire student athlete. The coaches of Team Afton have the skill level to instruct, guide, and support every racer toward success.  We have witnessed amazing success in so many Team Afton athletes, including our son's personal success in ski racing.  But we feel, more importantly, that Team Afton's milieu of supporting the whole athlete, provides a training ground for learning life skills that the athletes will take with them far beyond the ski slopes. Thank You Tony, all the coaches, and everyone who supports Team Afton, for providing a great place for our son to be.
  • Hats off to the Team Afton coaches!! What an awesome job you all did to contribute to the success of our annual Paul Augustine Championship Race. It was a very successful day all around… over 200 racers, over 600 starts, 400 hamburgers, 666 raffle tickets, 120 trophies, a glorious flag presentation, a warm day, sunny afternoon. But more importantly, it was a day to showcase Team Afton’s dedicated coaches, hospitality, enthusiasm, volunteer spirit, and our terrific club culture. Tony – thank you for your leadership. Bravo to all you coaches!

And, here's what our ski racers are saying:

  • I race with Team Afton because of the joy of ski racing, the team spirit, and the great people on the team.
  • Through ski racing, you get to meet a lot of kids from all over the country and get to know them well.
  • I really feel good about myself when I’m racing and training.
  • Our coaches are energetic and enthusiastic. They seem like 2nd parents.
  • We’re smaller than other teams. I like it that way because you know everyone and you get to spend more individual time with the coaches. There isn’t a cockiness like on larger teams where you need to be better and well equipped than everyone else. Team Afton feels like a family.
  • Tony really helps me get my head in the game for the upcoming season.  I like to review  the past season and discuss areas where I struggled.  Then we know what to work on in the summer at Mt. Hood and in the fall at Copper Mountain.  And this gives me a stronger connection with Tony - he reassures me and gives me confidence.
  • Hi Tony! I don't think there is a day that goes by without me thinking or talking about ski racing. I have so many fond memories... WOW!  I was so lucky to grow up with you as my role-model/leader!
  • Ski racing makes me a happy person. I get to participate in the best sport in the world. As for the experiences, friendships, memories, and frostbitten toes...those are priceless.  Thanks for your support, guidance, and friendship!
